The 1813 is far and away the most available date in the popular Capped Head Left type of 1813-1829 but it is still a scarce issue. Examples are regularly seen in the EF45 to AU55 range but most have been dipped or processed and examples with deep, natural color are not readily available.
This fresh-to-the-market example exhibits superb deep natural reddish-gold and steel colors which are wholly evident of complete originality. The surfaces are very clean and the strike is about average for the issue with some weakness on the obverse border from 1:00 to 6:00 and weakness at the upper reverse. The aforementioned coloration makes this a really attractive coin for the grade and it is one of the nicer AU 1813 half eagles I have handled (and I have handled some extremely nice ones…)
The only CAC approved PCGS AU50 1813 half eagle to sell at auction in recent years was Heritage 1/13: 7097 at $11,163; it had a gold label CAC sticker but lacked the great color which the present piece possesses.
A perfect coin for the type collector who wants an affordable but truly special Capped Head Left half eagle.
CAC has approved five in this grade with 58 finer.
