BD-4, R-2. Large Date, Large 5 variety.
The Capped Bust Left half eagle series was produced from 1807 through 1812 and with the exception of some very rare die varieties, it is a series which can be completed within a few years of careful searching. The 1810 issues (there are four) range from common to very rare and the Large Date, Large 5 is one of the most available issues of this design, making it ideal for type collectors as well as specialists.
This choice “slider” is notable for its lovely color and original appearance. There is a considerable amount of reddish-gold color towards the borders, especially on the obverse. This coin likely saw no real circulation but it does show friction on the high spots. The strike is sharp, the surfaces are choice and this is an especially charismatic coin for the grade.
No PCGS AU58 examples have sold at auction since two realized $10,350 in 2012. An NGC AU58 with CAC approval brought $10,575 as Heritage 1/15: 7040.
If you have been thinking about purchasing a nice piece of early gold without breaking the bank, this is the perfect coin to begin your next collecting adventure!
CAC has approved nine in this grade with 26 finer.
