ATTRACTIVE 1810 HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
BD-4, R-2. Large Date, Large 5.
The 1810 Large Date, Large 5 is the most common of four distinct varieties of half eagle struck in this year. It is not easy to locate in CAC-approved AU grades, however, as the supply of these coins seems to have totally dried up in recent months.
This well made, lustrous example shows medium natural orange-gold color on the obverse and the reverse. The strike is extremely sharp with full hair and feathers and the borders are well-defined as well. What appears to be a scratch from 12:00 to 2:00 on the obverse is a mint-made defect seen on all 1810 Large Date, Large 5 half eagles. A few very faint adjustment marks are on the face and they are aligned horizontally.
The last CAC AU55 example of this variety to sell at auction was a wonderfully toned NGC piece which was bid up to $10,575 as Heritage 4/15: 6173.
CAC has approved 11 in this grade with 36 finer.
