Pointed 6, 8 x 5 Stars. BD-1, R-4.
The 1806 Pointed 6 half eagle is many times scarcer than itsKnobbed 6 counterpart. This is not fully reflected by the price levels of these two distinct issues.
This very conservatively graded example seems to be at least an AU53 to AU55 and it is possible that PCGS mistook the typical weak central strike of this variety for wear. The color is a very deep, even green-gold and there are vestiges of dirt in the protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are immaculate with no marks worthy of mention and there is a lack of adjustment marks as is common on this specific die pairing.
There have been no PCGS AU50 examples of the 1806 Pointed 6 half eagle to sell at auction since the Heritage 6/06: 3265 coin at $7,475; the last PCGS AU53 was sold in Heritage’s 4/10 CSNS auction and it realized $8,625.
A truly “cherry” example of what is probably the rarest 19th century date of the Draped Bust Right half eagle type.
CAC has approved three in this grade with seven finer.
