CHOICE AU 1806 POINTED 6 HALF EAGLE

BD-1, R-4. Pointed 6, Stars 8X5.

The 1806 Pointed 6 is the rarest of the Capped Bust Right half eagles dated from 1800 through the end of this design in 1807. Despite its rarity, it only gets a small premium over more common issues such as the 1806 Round 6. The Pointed 6 is not often seen above AU53 to AU55 and most of the examples in AU53 holders are scrubbed and unappealing.

This frosty yellow-gold example has more than enough luster to grade AU55 but it shows a typical weak strike at the central obverse which might be unfairly construed as wear. There is some rub seen in the fields as well as some small ticks consistent with the grade. The eye appeal is excellent.

Only one example (see below) in PCGS AU53 has sold at auction since April 2010.

This would make a great example for the type collector and it is good value, as well, due to its scarcity.

CAC has approved three in this grade with eight finer.

Ex Heritage 4/16: 5798 where it sold for $10,575.
