The 1803/2 is a popular issue in the Capped Bust Right series due to the clarity of its overdate and its reasonably good quality of manufacture. It is seen sometimes in the lowest Uncirculated grades but it is scarce in properly graded MS62 to MS63 and quite rare above this.
This coin is unusual in that it is nearly fully Prooflike, especially on the obverse. Both sides are well detailed and show rich natural green-gold color. Some scuffiness in the obverse fields is exaggerated by the reflectiveness; the reverse is clean and choice. If I were asked to “split grade” this coin, I would call it MS62/MS64.
A PCGS/CAC MS62+ example of this date sold for $21,451 in the Great Collections 5/14 auction.
This is the only 1803/2 half eagle graded MS62+ by NGC and it is a magnificent coin which would fit well into nearly any set of early half eagles.
CAC has approved 13 in MS62 (with two of these in 62+) with 16 finer.
