LOVELY CHOICE AU 1802/1 HALF EAGLE

BD-7, R-5. High overdate; Imperfect T’s in reverse legend.

The 1802/1 is one of the more available dates in the Capped Bust Right/Heraldic Eagle reverse half eagle type. It is frequently seen in all AU grades but seldom with natural color and choice surfaces. In fact, it is likely that fewer than 10% of the coins slabbed as AU will ever garner a CAC sticker.

This very choice piece seems closer to an AU58 than its actual AU55 grade. It is very lightly worn with choice surfaces below natural green-gold color. The quality of the planchet is excellent and the strike is razor sharp with uncommonly bold detail on the hair and feathers. It is doubtful that many nicer 1802/1 half eagles in 55 holders exist!

A non-CAC 1802/1 half eagle in PCGS AU55 sold for $11,750 as Lot 10240 in Stacks Bowers 2015 ANA auction while another PCGS AU55, this with CAC approval, realized $12,925 as Stacks Bowers 2014 ANA: 11074.

This piece will likely sell quickly as many collectors are seeking nice AU early gold such as this.

CAC has approved 15 in this grade with 39 finer.
