This is a numismatically significant issue as it is the penultimate coin from this very interesting and currently undervalued series. Only 2,300 business strikes were made in 1889 and examples that grade MS64 and above are hard to locate. In my opinion, the current PCGS population for MS64′s seems much inflated by resubmissions and this hunch is verified by the fact that only ten PCGS 64′s have sold at public auction since the Bass II auction in 1999.
This satiny borderline Gem has rich orange-gold color and full detail on both sides; a small hairline on the lower obverse at the truncation off the bust is probably all that keeps this from grading MS65. If you need a choice, attractive higher grade Three Dollar gold piece for your type set, this coin presents a nice alternative to the typically seen 1874 and 1878 issues.
