The 1885 is one of just two Three Dollar gold pieces from the 1880′s with a business strike mintage of fewer than 1,000. It is typically seen in AU55 to MS62 grades and it is an issue that saw little contemporary circulation. This example appears to have been a pocket piece as it is well -worn but shows virtually no marks and it has lovely rich reddish-gold color on both the obverse and the reverse. An unusual coin with a great naked-eye appearance.
This is the only EF example of this date approved by CAC; 16 finer have been approved as well.
