Only 1,300 business strike 1871 three dollar gold pieces were produced. Unlike the low mintage dates from the 1880′s, this date was not hoarded and it is, today, quite scarce in Uncirculated. Most of the circulated examples I see are in the AU50 to AU55 range and seldom show good eye appeal.
This pleasing, lightly worn example has claims to an AU58 grade on account of its lack of obvious wear. It shows nice, original medium orange-gold color with flashes of prooflike luster in the protected areas. Other than a few really minor scuffs on the obverse, the surfaces approach perfection and this piece is a great combination of numismatic history and scarcity.
