The 1871 has one of the lowest mintages in the entire Three Dollar series with just 1,300 business strikes made. Unlike the low mintage issues from the 1880′s, this date was not hoarded by contemporary dealers and collectors and it is scarce in all grades.
This frosty example is notable for possessing lovely natural rich orange-gold and greenish color. It shows a typical slightly weak strike at the central reverse but it is free of wear, has no major marks and is very pleasing for the date and grade.
A PCGS MS62 brought $6,698 as Heritage 12/13: 26729 and, in my opinion, it was not as choice as this piece.
