A total of 5,000 business strike 1863 three dollar gold pieces were made. As with all Civil War gold coins, many were melted but, for some unknown reason, this date is a little more available in Uncirculated than the other threes from this era. There are some superb pieces known; the recent Heritage 2013 FUN sale had a lovely PCGS MS66+ and I have handled at least three gems.
This is a very choice example for the grade with an uncommonly frsh appearance for an MS61. It shows extensive clashmarks on the obverse and less so on the reverse as is typical for this date. Both sides are frosty and show totally natural green-gold and rose hues. There are a few light contact marks in the left obverse field and to the right of the F in OF; the reverse is choice.
An MS61 example of the 1863 three dollar has not appeared at auction since January 2004.
This is a perfect coin for the Civil War gold collector who wants a nice Mint State 1863 but who doesn’t want to break the bank on this date.
