The 1861 is not as scarce as the 1864 and the 1865 but it is seen less often than the 1862 and 1863 in the Civil War subset of this denomination. It is generally not seen above AU55 and most coins in AU58 holders are not choice.
This Gem Slider has the look of an MS63 to MS64 but there is some subtle friction on the obverse relief details and a luster break in the left field. It was nice warm golden color over choice surfaces and it is better made than usual with less obvious mint-made planchet striations.
The most recent auction record for a PCGS AU58CAC 1861 Three Dollar gold piece is $6,160 for Heritage 1/15: 6986. A nicer example which lacked a CAC sticker brought $7,638 as Heritage 7/14: 3908.
If available, a PCGS/CAC MS61 example would cost over $10,000 and would likely not be much nicer than this piece.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with only two finer (63, 64).
