POPULAR 1861 THREE DOLLAR GOLD PIECE
Only 5,959 business strike 1861 Three Dollar gold pieces were made and this date is always popular due to its Civil War associations. Collector grade examples are not often seen as this date tends to come either well worn or nice.
This deep orange-gold example is lustrous and it shows uncommonly rich natural color for an issue that is often stripped of color. The obverse shows light, shallow abrasions in the fields while the reverse is choice save for a few ticks beneath the 3.
The only PCGS AU55 to sell at auction since 2011 realized $4,465 as Goldberg 6/14: 4465.
Many collectors seek to assemble a five coin Civil War set of Three Dollar gold pieces and this coin would fit well nto a higher grade grouping of this sort.
