The 1881-CC is the scarcest post-1878 half eagle from the Carson City mint. It is comparable in rarity to issues such as the 1871-CC and the 1877-CC. There are around 125 known with many in the VF-EF range. The typical example is bright and unappealing from repeated scrubbings and choice, original 1881-CC half eagles are very scarce.
This medium russet gold example shows some deeper color at the borders. It is graded spot on by NGC as it shows enough detail and has clean enough surfaces to merit being called Choice Extremely Fine. There is an old scratch on the reverse below AMER which is easily overlooked unless you use a glass to examine the surfaces.
Only three EF45′s have sold at auction since March 2005 and the last one, slabbed by PCGS, brought $4,406 as Heritage 3/13: 4243.
A nice example of this scarce late date Carson City half eagle.
