The 1877-CC is, in my opinion, the most undervalued Carson City half eagle from the 1870′s. It is seen less often than dates such as the 1871-CC and 1874-CC yet it sells for little–if any–premium over these two issues.
This nice collector grade example has medium green-gold and orange colors atop smooth, evenly worn surfaces. The fields are very clean and there are fewer marks than usual for the grade.
No PCGS graded EF40 1877-CC half eagle has sold at auction since November 2003 (!). The last NGC 40 to sell at auction was a CAC approved piece offered as Lot 6477 in Heritage’s 4/14 event; it realized $4,113.
A hard coin to find in this grade and price range.
