SOLD – $5.00 – 1874-S PCGS AU55
Serial Number 8335.55/28995436
PCGS Lookup Number 8335
As with many of the With Motto San Francisco half eagles from this decade, the 1874-S is a vastly underrated issue. Of the 16,000 struck around 125-150 are known but nearly all grade VF-EF. The 1874-S is unknown in Uncirculated and very rare in properly graded AU55. I have never personally handled one finer than this.
This well struck, lightly abraded example shows medium russet colors which are more pronounced on the obverse, especially near the date. A few scattered abrasions in the obverse fields limit the grade but the quality is far better than average for the date.
The last PCGS AU55 example of the 1874-S half eagle to sell at auction was ex Heritage 9/08: 3724, which realized $4,313. Only four examples graded AU55 by PCGS have sold at auction since 2000.
PCGS has graded just one finer than this (an AU58) yet this coin remains remarkably affordable, If this were a NO Motto San Francisco of comparable grade rarity, it would be priced at least two to three times higher. A great opportunity for the savvy collector.
