SCARCE CAC APPROVED 1872-S HALF EAGLE
The 1872-S is very similar in overall rarity to the 1870-S half eagle and it is scarcer than either the 1871-S or the 1873-S. There are an estimated 125-150 known with most in the EF40 to AU50 range. Properly graded AU55 to AU58 pieces are very rare and much undervalued and I am not aware of a single 1872-S half eagle in Uncirculated.
This choice, original example is very solid for the grade with natural russet color atop unmarked surfaces. Some luster clings to the protected areas and the wear is evenly distributed on both the obverse and the reverse.
No CAC approved EF 45 1872-S half eagle has ever appeared at auction.
Excellent value for the collector who appreciates big bang for the buck.
CAC has approved two in this grade with two finer (both AU55) for a total of just five in all grades.
