The 1871-CC is the second most available early date half eagle from this mint but it is far scarcer than the 1874-CC. There were a total of 20,770 produced and around 150 are known with most in the VF-EF range.

This is a choice coin for the grade with even wear and very good eye appeal for the date. The color is a soft natural green-gold shading to orange with the obverse deeper in hue than the reverse. Both sides are clean with no detracting marks. I could easily have seen this coin in a VF35 holder.

Heritage 2/11: 4471, graded VF30 by PCGS and approved by CAC sold for $4,313 and it was a bit more choice than the present example. Heritage 1/11: 6920, also graded VF30 by PCGS but not approved by CAC sold for $2,990. It was far less choice than the current example.

A pleasing, affordable example of the second year of issue half eagle made at the fabled Carson City mint.

CAC has approved two in this grade with five finer.
