SCARCE 1867-S HALF EAGLE
As with the eagle of this date, the 1867-S half eagle is a scarce, underappreciated issue with fewer than 100 survivors known. This issue saw extensive circulation in Western commerce and as a result most of the known pieces are in the VF-EF grade range.
This fresh-to-the-market example shows nice natural russet color with some reddish overtone on the obverse. There are the expected surface marks but nothing seems deep or fresh and the eye appeal is above-average for the issue.
Only one PCGS EF40 has sold since 2009 and it brought $2,526 at Stacks Bowers 11/13: 3657.
It is hard to imagine a much scarcer gold coin than this priced as reasonably as it is.
CAC has approved three in this grade with three finer.
