SCARCE 1860-S HALF EAGLE
While clearly not as hard to locate as the Civil War half eagles from this mint, the 1860-S is still a scarce issue in its own right. Only 70-80 are known and unlike its Civil War counterparts, this date is affordable in collector grades.
This piece shows bright reddish toning at the borders which is a nice contrast the green-gold undertone. The obverse is choice for the grade with a bit of luster and only shallow marks; the reverse shows a deeper, more noticeable mark below the second S in STATES.
Only one PCGS EF40 has sold at auction since May 1999 and it realized $2,300 as Heritage 10/08: 2118.
A nice, affordable example and seemingly excellent value at under $3,000.
