I regard the 1860 as one of the more undervalued No Motto half eagles from the Philadelphia mint, along with the 1846 Small Date, 1850 and 1859. Slightly less than 20,000 were struck and there are an estimated 100 or so known with most in the EF40 to AU50 range.
This lustrous example shows light golden-orange color atop slightly abraded surfaces. The eye appeal is above average for the date and grade and this is actually one of the better 1860 half eagles that I have seen in a while.
There have been no AU55 examples of this date sold at auction since Stacks Bowers 2/12: 7546, graded by PCGS and not approved by CAC, went for $1,323.
CAC has approved five in tis grade with three finer.
