The 1859-C is a much scarcer issue than the 1857-C and 1858-C although it gets little premium. It is not often seen above AU53 to AU55 and it is very difficult to locate with original color and surfaces.
This is a choice, pleasing example with nice medium to deep green gold color. As always, the reverse appears more worn than the obverse and this is the result of an improperly hubbed die; this is also seen on 1860-C half eagles. There are some flecks of dirt in the protected areas on either side and the eye appeal is far better than average for the date and grade.
The last three auction records for this date in AU53 are all $2,990 but none of the coins (two NGC’s and one PCGS) were as choice and original as the present example.
Good value for the savvy collector as a low end EF example is worth just a few hundred dollars less.
