This is the most common half eagle from Charlotte in higher grades. This and the fact that the issue tends to be well-made, means the 1858-C is an ideal type coin for the collector.
If I had to teach someone what an original Charlotte half eagle was supposed to look like, I would choose this coin. It has wonderful rich natural green-gold color with an even appearance on both sides. The obverse is lustrous and choice save for a few light marks in the left field; the reverse has a few patches of dirt in the protected areas and there is a small lightly struck area at the horizontal lines in the shield. The eye appeal is exceptional.
The last AU58 example of this date to sell at auction was an NGC coin offered as Heritage 11/11: 4311, which brought $4,600. While attractive for the grade, it was not (at that time) approved by CAC.
This is one of the nicest AU58 Charlotte half eagles of date which I have handled in some time.
