RARE 1856-O HALF EAGLE
The 1856-O is tied with the 1855-O and 1857-O as the third rarest New Orleans half eagle but it is harder to find than its two counterparts in the higher AU grades, especially with decent color and choice surfaces.
This example is not what I would define as “crusty” but it is clearly better than average, especially for this notoriously poor eye appeal issue. It shows light to medium yellow-gold color and has some remaining luster. The surfaces show scattered marks in the fields and there is a small spot in the metal at star six. As is common, the radial lines on the stars at the left side are flat.
The only PCGS AU55 1856-O half eagle to sell at auction since 2004 brought $5,463 as Heritage 11/11: 4308.
This date is nearly impossible to find in grades higher than this and this is the first pleasing 1856-O half eagle that I have offered for sale on my website in a number of years.
