Variety 39-FF.
The 1856-D half eagle is seldom found in collector grades and even less often with natural color and choice surfaces.
This piece is closer to a 40 than it is a 35 and much of what appears to be “wear” is, in fact, weakness of strike. The surfaces are clean and show natural light green-gold with deeper reddish shadings in the obverse recesses.
No PCGS VF35 1856-D half eagle has ever sold at auction.
CAC has approved one in this grade and 12 finer.
