The 1856-C is generally accorded common date status among Charlotte half eagles but it is a scarcer issue, especially with choice surfaces and natural color. This date is almost never seen without either processed surfaces or poor overall eye appeal due to excessive abrasions.
This choice piece shows deep, even russet color on both sides and nearly enough detail for consideration at a slightly higher grade. There is some minor weakness on the first two stars and at the central obverse, as made. The surfaces are choice and appealing.
Two PCGS EF45 1856-C half eagles have sold at auction since the beginning of 2013 and both were low end; as reflected by their APR’s of $2,174 and $2,233. No CAC approved 1856-C half eagle in this grade has sold at auction.
A nice piece for the date or type collector.
CAC has approved three in this grade with six finer.
