Variety-1. Specialists are aware of the fact that this is an extremely hard issue to find in EF40-AU50 grades with good overall eye appeal – and this is confirmed by the low number of 1856-C half eagles that have, so far, been approved by CAC.
This lustrous example is overlaid with light orange-gold color and the surfaces are cleaner than usual for the date and grade.
There have been three auction appearances for this date in PCGS AU50 since the summer of 2011. The lowest of these was $2,630 while the highest was $4,025. None of the three was approved by CAC.
CAC has approved this one example in AU50 with only two finer.
