Variety 38-CC. Medium D mintmark. Varieties are known with a Medium and Large mintmark.
The 1855-D is the rarest Dahlonega half eagle from the 1850′s and it is the fourth rarest of 26 issues in higher grades. It is generally seen in EFand it is hard to find in properly graded About Uncirculated. It is extremely rare in Uncirculated with four or five currently accounted for. The finest known is an NGC MS64 which was first sold as Lot 497 in Stack’s May 1995 Milas collection where it brought $35,200.
This newly graded 1855-D half eagle is the first Uncirculated example of this date that I have handled in a numbr of years. It is well struck with satiny luster seen on the light, vibrant rose-gold surfaces. The strike is excellent for the issue with much better central detail than usual. There is no appreciable wear on either side and the surfaces show far fewer marks than normal. A few minor ticks can be seen in the left obverse field and small, scattered ticks are observable in the reverse fields.
The last Uncirculated 1855-D to sell at auction was Heritage 3/08: 1479, graded MS61 by NGC. It brought $11,500 and it displayed questionable splotchy coloration.
Here is an extremely important Dahlonega half eagle for the advanced collector.
