Variety 38-CC. Medium D mintmark. A better struck example than what is typically seen for this variety with some weakness at the centers but much detail at the bun, the top of the head and the corresponding reverse. The luster is typical for the issue with a slightly grainy texture but this piece is a very high end slider with little actual wear and nice pastel golden colors on both sides.
The 1855-D is the third rarest Dahlonega half eagle in terms of its overall rarity and the fourth rarest in terms of high grade rarity. It is very rare in the higher AU grades and extremely rare in Uncirculated with just five known to me. In the last five+ years, there are just two auction records for examples graded AU58. In November 2011, Stacks Bowers sold a very nice PCGS AU58 for $10,350 while Heritage sold an NGC coin in this grade for $5,463 in their October 2010 auction.
If you collect this series by date, the chances are good that you either don’t have an 1855-D in any grade or if you do have one, it is in AU50 or below. Here is a great chance to buy a nice 1855-D at a price that won’t break the bank.
