The 1854-O is the second most available No Motto half eagle from this mint but it is scarce and undervalued in properly graded AU58.
This is probably one of the nicer AU58′s of this date that I have handled as it is fully original with semi-prooflike surfaces which are lightly marked. The color is a pleasing natural green-gold with some reddish splashes in the protected areas of the reverse. There is a thin mint-made grease stain in the right obverse field and a shallow mint-made lamination near the first two stars at the left obverse.
No CAC approved AU58 example has sold at auction. A PCGS AU58 without CAC approval sold for $3,537 as Heritage 1/14: 6673.
With Uncirculated pieces very rare and very expensive, this gem slider with CAC approval should appeal to most New Orleans gold collectors.
CAC has approved four in this grade with none finer.
