The 1854-O s the second most available No Motto half eagle from the New Orleans mint but it is many times more difficult to locate than the 1844-O which is the most common. The 1854-O is undervalued in the higher AU grades and is scarce with original color and surfaces.
This pleasing example shows rich natural russet and green-gold coloration atop lightly marked surfaces. The detail is excellent and the eye appeal is better than average for the date and grade.
There have been no AU55 examples of this issue to sell at auction since Heritage 10/11: 4919 brought $1,955. That coin, which was graded by NGC, was approved by CAC.
A nice value for the collector of New Orleans half eagles at less than $2,000.
