Large D; Variety 35-AA.
The 1853-D is one of the two most available Dahlonega half eagles along with the 1854-D. This makes it perfect for type purposes. It is only moderately scarce in the lower AU grades but most pieces in third-party holders are not choice enough to be approved by CAC.
This lustrous yellow-gold example has very clean surfaces which lack significant marks. The strike is typical for this specific die variety with weakness at the borders but good sharpness at the centers. What appears to be a diagonal scratch on the obverse is on the holder and, thankfully, not on the coin.
Five PCGS AU53 1853-D half eagles have crossed the auction block since August 2012 but none have been CAC approved.
An affordable common date Dahlonega half eagle which would work well as a type coin.
CAC has approved three in this grade with 15 finer.
