Bass Pedigree.
The 1853-C is one of the most available half eagles from the Charlotte mint. It is scarcer in high grades than comparable dates such as the 1852-C, 1857-C and 1858-C and nice, middle grade AU pieces are, in my opinion, undervalued.
This medium green gold example is well struck with a full, clear mintmark. It has very little actual wear but just a few too many marks to call AU58. It is housed in an older pre-barcode slab and it is certainly as nice or even nicer than many pieces graded AU58 by today’s standards.
The last PCGS AU55 example to sell at auction was Heritage 5/09: 1664. It brought $3,220.
CAC has approved just two in this grade with three finer.
