AFFORDABLE BUT CHOICE 1852-D HALF EAGLE
The 1852-D is a bit scarcer than the 1853-D and 1854-D half eagles but it remains one of the more available half eagles from this mint. It is found with two distinct “looks:” weak at the borders (as on this coin) or sharper at the borders.
This piece was recently repatriated from an Italian coin auction and who knows how it found its way to this location. It is choice and appears to be unmolested with nice natural medium russet hues in full evidence on the obverse and the reverse. There are a few small ticks seen in the fields which are consistent with the grade and the overall eye appeal is excellent.
There have been five 1852-D half eagles graded EF45 by PCGS sold at auction since October 2010 but none of these were CAC approved.
A nice, affordable Dahlonega half eagle which represents unusual quality for the grade.
CAC has approved nine in this grade with 14 finer.
