The 1851-C is a slightly better date in the Charlotte half eagle series. It is seen most often in the EF40-AU50 grades but seldom with natural color and choice surfaces.
This is a pleasing coin for the grade with even rich green-gold hues on the obverse and the reverse. Both sides show some scattered old marks which are consistent with the assigned grade. The “hole” in Liberty’s earlobe is diagnostic of this variety.
There have been just three auction records for this date in EF40 since the summer of 2008 and none, of course, have been for CAC approved coins.
A great starter Charlotte half eagle for the new collector.
CAC has approved just this one coin in EF40 with six finer.
