The 1851-C half eagle does not command much of a premium over dates like the 1849-C and 1850-C but it is much scarcer in terms of overall and high grade rarity. It is hard to locate in AU grades, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This sharply detailed example shows nice medium to deep green-gold color with some suggestions of reddish-gold at the obverse border. There are a few scattered scuffs in the fields which limit the grade but this piece has the body and appearance of an AU53 to AU55 coin.
The last CAC approved NGC AU50 1851-C half eagle to sell at auction brought $2,760 as Heritage 5/12: 5006. That coin was not as choice or original as the present example.
A nice coin for the type collector who has a budget of around $3,000 and who wants a slightly better date.
CAC has approved two in this grade with three finer.
