This is the fourth scarcest of 26 half eagles from this mint and it is a date which is extremely hard to find with natural color and good eye appeal.
This is an evenly worn example with nice natural green-gold color. The strike is typically soft for the issue with weakness on the stars and at the centers. The obverse is lightly marked and is actually rather choice for the date and grade; the reverse shows a small mint-made retained lamination under the right side of the second S in STATES. The mintmark is mostly visible and it shows diagnostic weakness on the lower half.
The only PCGS AU53 to sell at auction in over two decades realized $4,113 as Heritage 2/14: 5284.
This date is lacking from most advanced sets of Dahlonega half eagles and the present example is one of the more natural-appearing pieces I’ve handled in some time.
