VERY CHOICE “SLIDER” 1850-C HALF EAGLE
Variety 3.
The 1850-C half eagle is a common date in this series in grades below AU55. Higher grade pieces are rare and there are not more than a handful known with deep, natural color and choice surfaces. These are in demand among knowledgeable specialists.
This is most likely the single nicest circulated 1850-C half eagle that I have ever offered for sale. Both the obverse and the reverse show deep, attractive reddish-orange and medium green-gold hues with the obverse just a smidgen deeper. The strike is very sharp and the mintmark is fully formed, unlike a number of higher grade 1850-C half eagles which have a weak or very faint C.A few light marks can be seen in the fields but none are detracting and a good amount of soft mint luster clings to both sides. The eye appeal is exceptional.
Only one PCGS AU58 has sold at auction since early 2009 and it sold for a strong $5,775 as Heritage 7/14.
While this lovely coin will likely windup in date set of Charlotte half eagles, it would make a great type coin for the collector seeking a single exceptional half eagle from this mint.
CAC has graded just this one coin in AU58 with none finer.
