Variety 2. High date. This is the rarer of the two known varieties by a large margin.
The 1849-C is among the more common half eagles from this mint and it is not hard to find even in the lower Uncirculated grades. In collector grades, it is not often seen with natural color and surfaces and most are bright with very heavily abraded surfaces.
This deeply toned example shows nice even green-gold color which is the “right” hue for this date. There is a good deal of dirt in the protected areas and the detail is suggestive of an AU50. A reeding mark in the left obverse field can be seen with the naked eye.
Suprisingly, no PCGS graded EF45 examples of this date have sold at auction since the Summer of 2009.
If you are searching for a nice type coin from the Charlotte mint or you are pondering the start of an affordable date set, this is a perfect coin with a nice “look.”
