The 1848 is not widely recognized as a scarce date in the No Motto half eagle set but it is far from common in Uncirculated. It sells for little premium over issues such as the 1847, 1851, 1852 and 1853 yet it is quite a bit scarcer. It is almost never found above MS62 to MS63.
This piece has superb natural orange-gold and greenish hues over lightly marked, very frosty surfaces. It was recently sourced from Europe and, no doubt, sat in a bank vault for many years. It would grade at least MS61 to MS62 were it not for a large reverse grease stain (mint made) on the reverse through the A in STATES towards above the eagle’s head.
The last MS60 1848 half eagle to sell at auction was Heritage 3/10: 2288, graded by PCGS, which realized $1,438.
Because of the aforemntioned grease stain, this is not a coin for every taste but it is original and very attractive in my opinion.
