The 1848-C is generally regarded as a common date in the Charlotte half eagle series but it is more difficult to locate than such issues as the 1849-C and 1850-C.
This choice coin is at the high end of the VF range and it compares favorably to coins that I have seen in EF40 holders. It shows nice deep yellow-gold color with splashes of red on the obverse; the reverse shows a good amount of dirt caked into the lettering and along the wingtips.
The last PCGS VF35 example to sell at auction was a non-CAC piece offered as Heritage 1/12: 6354. It brought $1,725. Only two PCGS VF35 examples of the 1848-C have been auctioned in over decade.
A nice, affordable piece for less than $2,000.
CAC has approved just this one coin in VF35 with 19 finer.
