The 1847-D is a common Dahlonega half eagle in circulated grades but it is rare and very undervalued in Uncirculated. Unlike many of the other dates from the 1840′s, it doesn’t exist above MS63 and I know of only three or so pieces in this grade.
This bright, vibrant example is clearly among the finest known 1847-D half eagles. It is extremely lustrous and well struck with rich yellow-gold color that mellows to a medium green-gold at the borders. There are just a few tiny ticks in the fields wwhich are consistent with the assigned grade. This piece has the best eye appeal which I can recall having seen on any higher grade 1847-D half eagle and it is clearly well into the Condition Census for the date.
With the exception of this coin (see the pedigree below), the last MS63 1847-D half eagle to sell at auction was Heritage 10/12: 5876, graded by PCGS, which brought $18,800. That coin had funky color and was not choice, in my opinion.
An important coin for the advanced collector of Dahlonega half eagles.
Ex Heritage 1/13: 5878, where it sold for $18,800
