COLORFUL, UBER-CRUSTY 1847-C HALF EAGLE
This well-travelled but evenly-worn Charlotte half eagle was likely either stored in a leather pouch or an old wood coin cabinet. It has acquired exceptional deep multi-colored toning on both the obverse and the reverse which makes it the very epitome of a “coin with character.”
Gold coins with this sort of coloration are rare and not often available for sale. This seems especially true with Charlotte half eagles and I can’t recall more than a handful of individual pieces with this degree and intensity of “crust.”
No PCGS VF25 1847-C half eagles have sold at auction. DLRC 2/15: 10297, a PCGS VF30 with nice color and in an old holder, sold for $2,100 but it was not nearly as attractive as this example.
A wonderful coin for the collector who appreciates Dirty Old Gold.
