While not as highly regarded or as highly valued, the 1846-O actually comes up for sale less often than its 1846-C and 1846-D (and 1846-D/D) half eagle counterparts. It is seen most often in VF and EF grades and is almost never found above the lower to middle AU range.

This well struck medium green-gold example has the details of an AU50 but there is a small old scratch from the bridge of the nose into the cheek and some marks on the reverse behind the eagle’s head. This coin still has good eye appeal and there are flashes of luster in the protected areas on both sides.

The last PCGS EF45 example of this date to sell at auction was Stacks Bowers 4/13: 1318 which brought $2,291. This is the only PCGS 45 to sell at auction since early 2009.

As with nearly all New Orleans half eagles from this decade, the 1846-O is a scarce, undervalued coin.
