SOLD – $5.00 – 1846-D/D PCGS EF40
Serial Number 8229.40/20423537
PCGS Lookup Number 8229
Variety 17-J. D/D mintmark.
The spectacular 1846-D/D is one of the most well-known blunders in the entire half eagle series. It is actually seen more often than the Normal Mintmark reverse but it is very popular due to its naked-eye relevance.
This nice example shows warm orange-gold and green hues on the obverse and reverse. It is solid for the grade with even wear and no severe marks. Both mintmarks are clearly visible to the naked eye.
The last PCGS EF40 example of this issue to sell at auction was ex Stacks Bowers 9/11: 5930. The coin sold for $2,243.
An affordable example of this popular variety.
