D/D mintmark. Variety 17-J. Designated by NGC as VP-001 on the holder.
Varieties of 1846-D half eagle are known with a spectacular repunched mintmark and a normal mintmark. The D/D is the more available but it tends to be in stronger demand due to its naked-eye appearance. It is scarce in properly graded AU53 to AU55 and very rare in full Mint State.
This fresh-to-the-market example has attractive deep natural color with green-gold centers contrasted by some darker reddish-gold on the obverse and outlining the device and lettering on the reverse. There are some moderate old ticks in the fields but none are serious; the detail is excellent with just a bit of striking weakness at the centers. The eye appeal is excellent for the date and grade.
There has been only one auction record for the 1846-D/D half eagle in this grade since September 2006. Heritage 8/12: 4584 brought $3,819 and it was not approved by CAC or original in appearance.
A nice piece for the date collector of Dahlonega half eagles.
CAC has approved only two in this grade with one finer (MS61).
