VERY SCARCE UNCIRCULATED 1840-O NO DRAPERY HALF DIME
Small O mintmark.
Varieties of 1840-O half dime exists with and without drapery. The 1840-O No Drapery is usually seen in circulated grades and it is quite scarce in Uncirculated with likely no more than 15-20 known, mostly in the MS60 to MS63 range.
This mostly untoned example is struck from heavily clashed and worn dies which show considerable amounts of metal flow in the fields. The clashing is heaviest in the right obverse field where an incuse E from the reverse is clearly evident. The overall look is crude but quaint and the specialist should appreciate the quality of this coin for the date and grade.
Only four PCGS MS63′s have sold at auction since 2007.
CAC has approved three in this grade with two finer.
