The 1901-S is the most common issue in the Liberty Head half eagle type and it can be found in MS65 with almost no effort. properly graded MS66′s are another story altogether and even though CAC has approved 15 of these, they appear very infrequently and are in strong demand among collectors of Gem Type U.S. gold.
This frosty Gem has magnificent surfaces with just a few small ticks visible. The color is a blend of rich yellow and lighter rose and it is similar on the obverse and reverse. The strike is as sharp as one could hope for and the overall level of eye appeal is exceptional, even for the grade.
If you are holding out for a higher grade Liberty Head half eagle for your type set, consider this: PCGS has only graded two 1901-S half eagles in MS67 and an example with CAC approval would bring $20,000+ if available.
CAC has approved 15 in this grade with four finer.
