This is an exceptional coin from an appearance standpoint with very strong black and white contrast as a result of heavily frosted devices and deep, watery fields. In fact, this is the strongest contrast that I have ever seen on an 1893 proof gold coin of any denomination. There are a few wispy lines in the left obverse field and what might be an ultra-fine grease stain at the throat but the eye appeal of this coin is off the charts. Due to a Depression in 1893, very few higher denomination proof gold coins were saved and Gems are extremely rare.
Heritage 1/12: 4916, an NGC PR65 designated as Ultra Cameo by this service, sold for $37,375.
This is one of the most cosmetically appealing Proof Liberty Head half eagles that I have ever owned and it is one of the finest known examples of a date which is underappreciated as a proof as well.
